Now to talk about the guns which is as important as anything else in the game (as you would expect from a title with Gungeon in the name). This is a very nice use of a risk vs reward system implanted into the game to force players to make quick decisions on if the risk is worth it for the possibility of a secret room. Although as mentioned these are also required to break the walls to get to secret rooms so it creates incentive for the player to not just spam their limited number of blanks and to want to save them to possibly find secret rooms which could contain higher tier treasure chests or possibly new characters to unlock. Blanks are a special action that you have a limited number off that pushes all the enemies around you back and destroys all the current bullets on screen, giving the player some breathing room and time. There is also always at least 1 secret room that you can possibly find if you are lucky but this requires blanks. Each floor also has a guaranteed 2 chest rooms where you can get either a gun or an item to help you on your travels. The Gungeon itself consists of a total of 5 floors with each floor having one boss and sometimes having a mid boss (depending on how good or bad your luck is).

You only ever enter the Gungeon with your characters starting items and nothing else and you only ever leave the Gungeon with the money you earned while in there, none of the items that you acquired. Every time you enter the Gungeon it will always be a different layout of rooms and enemies so it’s never the same so that requires the player to always be prepared for whatever is to come.

You will also unlock more characters as you play the game and find them within the Gungeon and free them. Some also have different amounts of health and accuracy. You start the game off with only 4 characters each with their own starting passive bonuses and starting gun. What makes this very simple 3 step cycle so enjoyable is the amount of variety and variables that everything has. The gameplay of Enter the Gungeon involves a very basic cycle of choose your character, enter the Gungeon, either fail or succeed (you will fail 90% of the time), and then return to the hub world and repeat it all over again. With this being a rouge-like game, you are expected to die a lot but as you would expect, with each time you enter the Gungeon (the main area of the game where you do all your “gaming” and “dungeoneering”) you will gain stuff to help you out in the hub such as money, extra characters to play as, npcs who will open shops in the hub world, and more. Enter the Gungeon is a rouge-like, top down, twin stick shooter, dungeon crawler game where you traverse through several rooms and floors fighting enemies and bosses all the while upgrading yourself with passive bonuses and guns that you find along the way.
